Maya on the Mountain: The Inscriptions of Cobá

The Boundary End Center is delighted to announce a Hieroglyphic Workshop – Maya on the Mountain: The Inscriptions of Cobá – led by David Stuart and slated for April 22-24.

Cobá — a site located in modern Quintana Roo, Mexico — has played an important role for BEC. George Stuart lived there from 1974-75 with his wife Gene and his children, including Ann and David Stuart; an experience which shaped David’s passion for the ancient Maya.

This immersive workshop will explore the many monuments of Cobá and their epigraphic content, including several recent advancements. The workshop will take place in the Annex: the educational facility created by George and located next to the Center’s library (see photo). The workshop will provide plenty of opportunities to visit and use the library and its resources.

The fee of $600 includes 2 days of workshop, 2 nights of comfortable lodging, a dinner reception, and breakfasts and lunches (more info below). All profits will go towards improving the BEC infrastructure.

Maya on the Mountain is conveniently slated before Maya at the Lago (April 25-27) in nearby Davidson.

Event details:

The event will begin on the evening of Monday the 22, when a dinner reception will be held in the BEC library (George’s former library).

Tuesday the 23 will be the most intensive workshop day, with hands-on glyph work in the annex, led by David Stuart who will be assisted by current George Stuart Residential Scholar, Mary Kate Kelly

Coffee and lunch will be provided on site. Dinner will move to a restaurant in nearby Weaverville (not included in price).

Wednesday the 24 will be another workshop day, which will be shorter, with coffee and a closing lunch provided.

Participants will then be free to head towards Davidson (2 hours away) for the Maya at the Lago Conference, which is centered on Northern Yucatan this year, and will include a workshop on the inscriptions of Ek’ Balam, on Thursday morning, led by Marc Zender and Stan Guenter.

The Asheville airport (AVL) is located 40 min from BEC (Greenville Airport 1.5hr; CLT 2.5hrs), and we hope that participants will be carpooling (but we will also be able to arrange for other modes of transportation). The (included) lodging will be in two beautiful large rental homes/BnB’s in Barnardsville, 10 min from BEC.

The event will include surprises and a unique opportunity to spend time in an intimate (maximum of 16 participants) workshop setting with David Stuart, and to connect with George’s rich heritage at the BEC.
